Winter weddings have a unique charm — twinkling lights, cosy venues, rich colours, and a magical atmosphere that’s hard to beat. But planning a wedding during the colder months comes with its own set of considerations. Whether you’re getting married in December, January, February, or March, having a clear plan is key to enjoying your day stress-free.

As a wedding planner, I’ve helped countless couples navigate the challenges of winter weddings, from lighting to décor to guest comfort. Here’s your ultimate winter wedding checklist to help you stay organised and excited for your big day.
1. Finalise Your Details With Your Venue Early
Winter weddings often mean shorter daylight hours and cooler temperatures. Choosing a venue with indoor flexibility, cosy space options is essential. Making use of the daytime and working with the early evening darkness means more memorable moments, with beautiful lighting for photos and a magical atmosphere for your guests. Confirming early makes your venue aware of expectations and yourself aware of what you can work with on the day. I can help you assess venues for winter suitability, ensuring your ceremony and reception are comfortable and beautifully styled regardless of the weather.
2. Prioritise Seasonal Styling & Décor
Winter offers the chance to play with rich colours, layered textures, and soft lighting. Think velvet ribbons, dark jewel tones, metallic accents, and lots of candles.
Working with a florist, we can create seasonal arrangements that suit your theme and venue, while staying practical for colder months. Making sure all the florals are in season and align with the theme is a priority. I coordinate with suppliers so your décor flows seamlessly from ceremony to reception.

3. Consider Lighting & Photography
With shorter days, timing your photography around golden hour is crucial. Getting outside even for a quick 10 minutes is truly worth it. Inside, candles, fairy lights, and lanterns not only add warmth but also create stunning photo opportunities.
I work closely with photographers to plan timelines that make the most of natural light and intimate indoor settings, ensuring your memories are captured perfectly.
4. Guest Comfort Matters
Winter can be chilly! Make sure your guests stay comfortable with:

Warm indoor spaces or fire pits outside
Warm welcome drinks like mulled cider or hot chocolate
Blankets for outdoor photos or arrival areas
Don't have too many photo opportunities outside, most of your guests may not be wearing weather appropriate shoes and clothing
Making good use of the inside areas for photo opportunities will be appreciated and plan for those moments where you would like everyone outside.
I can coordinate logistics and extras to keep everyone happy without you having to think twice.
5. Timeline & Logistics Planning
Winter weddings require careful timing — from travel considerations to meal service and evening entertainment. A planner ensures everything runs smoothly, so you can enjoy your day. Plan A, B and C for weather disruptions is needed to ensure photos and flow of the day is always something you have planned for and happy with.
I manage supplier schedules, ceremony transitions, and even last-minute weather challenges, giving you peace of mind throughout.
6. Plan Your Winter Extras
Little touches make a big difference:

Seasonal favours (think mini candles or treats)
Winter-themed signage or stationery
Seasonal menu options with comforting dishes
Greenery and warm lighting
Winter inspired personalised cocktail menus
Evening Reception festive food
I love helping couples add personal touches that highlight the season without feeling cringey.
Winter weddings are magical, but they can feel overwhelming without a solid plan. With the right preparation, you can embrace the season’s beauty while keeping stress at bay. Winter is one of my favourite seasons for capturing some English charm, romance and festive fun!
Love,
Leah
